| S950 Sampling hot on the inputs! |

Hi, does anybody fancy doing the old trick of sampling into the s950 but at very high levels. I have only heard about people doing it, but never heard it myself. From what i can find on the net, it's sampling to loud and at low sample rates that gives a sound unique to the 950 and poss the 900 too? This is something that i have never come across in another sampler, and is a bid no no in basic sampling practice. So anybody up for putting a classic drum break to the test?

So here is what you get with a hot signal.
The input stage of the 950 works like a kind of compressor when the signal is louder. And it also add distortion (but not that terrible digital clipping like all the soundcards)
The example include the following samples:
1. Original sample from vinyl (recorded direct to the PC)
2. 1 sec silence
3. sampled "normal" at bandwidth 19000
4. sampled "very hot" at bandwidth 19000
5. sampled "normal" at bandwidth 8000
6. sampled "very hot" at bandwidth 8000
7. 1 sec silence
just to compare the bandwith I rearranged the samples from above
8. "normal" 19000
9. "normal" 8000
10. 1 sec silence
11. "hot" 19000
12. "hot" 8000
I recorded all the samples to an Audio Editor (Adobe Audition) analyzed them and corrected the volumes to get the same average dB

Here is the second file: Its the same as above except that every sample is normalised individualy to -0.1dB (this process is sort of the "makeup gain" or "auto gain" on a compressor unit or plugin)

I recommend to download it and take a look at the waveform in your audioeditor to also see whats happen to the signal.
BTW the MPC2000 (i dont know about the other MPCs) also get a nice distortion effect when the input stage is driven hard.
My Casio FZ1 dont accept hot signals. A hot sample will get the annoying digital clipping.

Thanks alot man, some very interesting results. Although i got a little confused as to what sample i was listening to at points. Never the less i think i just like beats to be "one louder" than they were before, and the hot input samples "feel" louder, and i expect it to be the distortion coming into play, as you say some sort of compression. I too have a Fz1/10/20 and none of them like a hot signal, if anything it's better to keep it quite a bit under, especially at 18 or 9 khz. This is the only sampler i know of that can be abused in this way, an has never been sold as a feature!

BTW do you know that xtra ring of the FZ when you set the loop crossfade (doesn't matter if you got a looped sample or not. Just set the crossfade to 0001 and your done)
This works especially when sampled at 18kHz and played back a few semitones lower than the original speed.

Yea it took along time to get one, and it's not all that great. The HD setup is 50/50 if it will work and it's not possible to load/save single samples, must be banks only - basically entire memory dumps. This also goes for saving, if you save it takes up an entire 2mb regardless. Fz-1 with memory upgrade is much better imo.
I only learned about that 0001 crunch trick recently, i do everything that way now, makes all the samples really crispy.
FZ forever underrated. |
