Sp1200 new display   Reply with quote

Want to change my old display to a new one and wonder what should i look/watch out for searching on the market ? i heard they rip off hard on ebay.
I also wonder about oled vs vfd. I see that Noritake has biggest popularity on the internet but oleds in theory got better angles, contrast and are cheaper like Winstar.
And how it looks like with the colors ? I like the most arctic or navy blue characters and i heard that you have to make custom foil for that ?
Is it worth to install contrast pot or angles are good for standing/siting position ?
I don't feel comfortable with soldering so i would get it done by a technician.
What display do you use and recommend guys ? Post a photo if You can
peace

VFD is nice but expensive. Any cheap 16 x 2 LCD display is an improvement on the original but you may have to mess around with the connection cable and mounting holes (very few modern displays have the same mounting hole layout as the original display).

Don't buy an OLED, as they do not work with the SP. Something to do with the initialisation and signal timing, which is different to standard LCD's.

There are sellers on ebay selling ready-made LCD's with the correct cable and mounting size BUT the one I tried was the wrong type of LCD. There are different types of LCD with different viewing angles - The SP needs a '6 o-clock' display as it is known, designed for viewing from straight on and below (approx 90 degree viewing angle) but the one I tried was a '12 o-clock' type designed for viewing from above, which was useless on the SP, so beware.

Cheers, vout

thanks for sharing vout ! appreciate that

i really wouldn't like to do that but looks like the safest way will be to overpay for vfd and not wasting time for doing a research and risk fucking up the unit

This is the reason I went VFD.  Not the best looking display but I can see it from any angle.  Also, keep in mind that there was a difference between SP1200 issue 1 and 2 with regards to the display.  There was a thread about this IIRC.

What do you guys think of the display on ebay?  Seems easy enough for installing on a reissue.

That is the exact display I tried in my SP12 and it was the wrong type of LCD that the seller provided - this was a while ago though and I did advise him at the time so hopefully he is using the correct '6 o-clock' type of display now, but I would ask the seller first.

If he is still supplying '12 o-clock' types then too bad, they really are unsuitable for the SP - you have to adjust the contrast knob on the display every time you move your head by a few degrees, it really is that bad.

Also, that seller has done a good job of making these replacement displays easy to fit, but as he explains they are standard displays with mounting holes modified to fit the SP12/1200. I found that a bit of trial and error was needed to get the display mounted just right.

Cheers, vout

That's good info, thanks.  I wouldn't have known about 12 o'clock vs 6 o'clock displays but I will be sure to ask if I decide to buy one.  I know they are not easy to fit but I don't know other options that aren't DIY.

in this video angles doesn't look bad i would say but i keep in mind vout experiences

assuming the contrast pot covers noritake viewing angles (still with a little more hassle).prices are similar.so mainly it's a difference of appearance and for me,led looks nicer than vfd BUT

https://www.facebook.com/WASKMUSIC/videos/934957056567197/

after this video where vfd kills it with the viewing angles i'm almost sure i will go with the noritake.i also talked with wask and he said vfd screens only have one color but you can change it with custom filters for example lee filters

He said that he bought display directly from noritake and p/n is Cu16025-uw2j - for greyboy. With some mods it will also fit in reissue.

So I just saw this one, I think it's new on ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-SP120...item3d3e49417b:g:dNMAAOSwLEtYk796

They also sell a version for grey boy and SP 12.

Unlike the other one on ebay, this one fits in easily.

Thoughts on this display?  I think it looks pretty nice.

That last display does look much better (and it's cheaper). I'd go with that.

In the video of the first display you can't really see it but I can tell he is adjusting the contrast pot as the camera moves - not good.

I am curious about viewing angles in that last one.Even though i prefer blue, this one looks quiet nice and is cheaper.

Can you guys - the vfd users - tell me what's your display product number ?

I searched with the CU16025-UW2J that wask told me and i can't find nothing on their website.I found somewhere else that there is another p/n display CU16025-UW6J (available on noritake's site) that supposed to fit and work in the sp but it has a little different (smaller) pcb sizes.I want to get screw holes fit as like in original, without any mods and those difference makes me wonder.

Thanks Drinks ! Did you had to make any holes mods or it fits as original one ? There is 4mm difference in pcb sizes

edit:
wask said for reissue - CU16025-UW2J  , for greyboy - CU16025-UW6J (perfect fit with the holes)

1st reissue and 2nd reissue are different also.

I would recommend the one boompbap92 linked to - the white one.  The VFD is nice but I think that looks much better.
