audio interface recommendations   Reply with quote

im in the market for an audio interface so wondering if anyone on here uses one with their sp and can make a recommendation. no outboard gear just looking to go straight from the sp into the interface

im looking at a focusrite scarlett 18i8 at the minute cause its in my price range, got good reviews and does what i need it to do

also a couple of related questions -

will i be able to slave my daw to the sp's clock over midi? so everything lines up as it should after recording but retains the sp's timing rather than the daw's

does the sp's metronome only work through the mix out? when using the sp's 8 outs i assume i wont be able to hear it

im not really up on low end interfaces.  anything i would recommend would be higher in price.  but i think whatever works for your budget will prob be along the same lines as whatever else is in the same range.  so get the one with the features that appeal most to you.  there are pretty comprehensive reviews and videos online so take some time to check that until you feel comfortable with your selection.

Not that it makes much of a difference but I would advise against newer Apogee gear as it's Mac only and they are notorious for dropping things like Firewire etc.  My Ensemble works with my 7 year old Mac but once that packs up, I'll have to find another with the same OS or the interface won't work.

I've heard good things about the Focusrite Scarlett and it looks like Focusrite are doing a clearance sale on first gen interfaces until Jan 30!

ended up with an 18i8 and it works perfectly. only thing im unsure about is syncing tempo to daw through midi. dont have a midi cable yet but should i be able to slave my daw to the sp for tempo so when i record everything lines up as it should?

Yes, that's right.

MIDI OUT of SCARLETT into MIDI IN of SP1200.  Then set SP sync to external so it's ready to sync to the incoming MIDI clock signal.

You don't say which DAW you are using but Logic, for example, needs to have MIDI sync on (which is a tickbox in the preferences menu under MIDI... er.. sync!... and then a drop down menu where you select the device).

There are other ways to sync it using MIDI time code for example - you'll need to see what works best for you.

Good luck!

cheers man

i am using logic as it happens. is it possible to slave the daw to the sp's clock rather than the other way round? would doing it the way you describe not mean losing the sp's unique timing / swing?

You can do it the other way around sure.  I've never noticed a loss of anything either way.  Very Happy

wouldnt syncing a daw to the sp defeat the point of syncing at all?

why fuck with settings and cables...just record in the audio if you want to preserve the sp's timing.

This is why I sync the SP to the DAW.  I really don't hear a difference in timing.  MIDI clock syncs to tempo, not frames (as MTC does) so not sure how that could work anyway.
