TUTORIAL DUMP EMU SP1200 - AWAVE STUDIO  Reply with quote

Here the tutorial for sp1200 dump

program: awave studio ( http://www.fmjsoft.com) (download the last version cause old version have some prob with the SEND ALL)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

let's start!

the problem as the manual of emu say is that u can't dump a file to an empty pad... i mean u have to already have a sample on the pad where you want to "send" the file from awave....

extract from sp1200 manual, page 79
--------------------------------
Note: The SP 1200 will only send the request if the selected sound is NOT empty.
The SP 1200 will only accept sound data up to the size of the existing sound in the
selected location. If a smaller sound is sent,  the SP 1200 will fill the leftover memory
with silence. You should then truncate the sound to conserve available memory.
--------------------------------

i suggest you to made a custom floppy in which u already assign sample to some pads... i did this (just an example):

i sample silence in every pad... and i set the lenght of every sample at 0,5 seconds, so i have something like this:

i assign 0.5 seconds for every pad from A1 to B8... so i use totally 8 seconds and i have 2 seconds free....(max 10 seconds of emu sp1200)
of course is just a case, u can make different setup....

ps
pay attention to the lengh of sample... i assign 0.5 seconds for pad, so i have to fit a sample file less or equal to 0.5 seconds (90kb), otherwise emu will trunc the sample at 0.5.... be aware

ok now u can open awave and load the files u need

before to make dump u must resample file to the emu appropriate khz, and exaclty at 26.040
so select all the files and go to TOOLS then AUDIO PROCESSING WIZARD, then RESAMPLE (Convert Sample Rate) and resample all.... for the algorhythm to use check the FIR filter: 24 bit s/n in order to have better conversion....

after this u can go to I/O then MIDI SDS TRANSMIT and u'll see a window like this

here u must check the Slow dev option, cause emu sp1200 need to be a little time to "eat" the file....
check obviously the 12bit....
the rest is easy u can choose the file and then the sample location (check the pictures above) and u're done....
u can use the "send all" but u must pay attention to lengh of sample, otherwise any error will trunc the whole process... but if u have made all ok u can send all the sample at one click, ready to have sp1200 full of sounds and ready to play!!
This is the function i LOVE, I usually do  drums on emu and some stabs, so I put all the samples inside awave, and click SEND ALL!!!
remember to download the latest version cause it has a delay for every sample dump, so for that, u can dump all the sample, cause the delay let sp1200 get out of the previous dump and be ready to receive a new one!!

for any help leave a msg here....
a video

pay attention to sound card too.... i try with xstation of novation and it doesn't works... i use a m-audio uno midi and it works perfectly....

well i try and it works, only one sample at time....
let's see in the next update if the dump all would be implemented.... it would be a cool backup system....

Did you check if they go back in ok ? That would be a cool way to make quick drum kits up / swap sounds.

i sampled silence, but u can use an already done kit... the fact is that sp1200 doesn't allow u to dump sound if the pad is empty...

for example u have a 0,5 sec kick on the A1, nothing on A2, a snare of 1,0 sec on A3

if u have a file of 0,7 sec in awave and u dump to:

sample location 0 (so A1): the file will be trunc at 0.5 sec long

sample location 1 (so A2): the file dump will be fail

sample location 2 (so A3): the file will be perfect

i just have done a kit of "silence" cause i record all at the right sample lenght... so for example an other kit i have is made in this way

from A1 to B2 (totally 10 pad) i sampled 0.5 lenght to each one.... for a total of 0.5 sec * 10 so i use 5 seconds total....

pad B3 and B4 are of 2.5 sec each one... so i can fit rhodes chord for example....

when in awave i use to rename that sample with an "x" or "z" in front of the name, so in an alphabetic order they are the last (cause in dump all AWAVE follow the alphab. order)....

so at the end i can "send all" cause i'm sure they are the last in order to be sent, properly ready for the pad B3 and B4.....

hope it's clear... it'a bit  complicatd but when u understand the trick is really perfect as a system

To Mr Macks: yeah for the moment is only one sample at time... i sent a mail to the author program and he reply that he will try to get a look (i sent him a service manual) in order to update soon that function... so u can backup all your old floppy at a sort of RECEIVE ALL with just one click(of course only the soundfiles)....

Thts great man, theoretically you could sample into sp, and save icks snares etc into the PC and have a huge range of samps to build kits from, swap sounds etc.

You've done some mad work there psoul.
