Old SP1200 vs. new SP1200?
Ayooooo! any differences between these machines? obviously the black is iller (to me) but is that it? just the shell?

As far as I'm informed, there are actually 3 different SP types :
1. Original grey edition
2. The re-issue with the new black & grey design
3. The second re-issue without the famous SSM2044 filters but with OP-AMPS which emulate these
Since the first re-issue there has been a power supply change so that the new SP's don't get too hot -> no more egg cooking

anyway to tell the second from the 3rd? Should I steer clear from the grey ones then?

The square switch is the final run. The round 'peg' switch before that. A check of your serial number should confirm this.
I used to own a grey joint and the sampling was very very raw. Too much ring mod on the pitch shifting and it was hot enough to warm my studio up in dead winter with the windows open. Having said that, the filters had a certain je ne sais quoi at the attack stage which my current model lacks.
I'm still happier with the one I have now, if only because it doesn't ring out as much. _________________ www.myspace.com/djdrinks

That's WRONG ! Only the original (grey) and the first re-issue (black) have the square power button :

Oh, and btw, its funny how this post is up for almost a year and no-one answers it, then you try to give some insight and all of a sudden, every man and his dog comes out of the woodwork to try and snare you. C'mon mate, a little restraint. If you think you know the answer all along then enlighten the fella.

Haha, well then what switch are you refering to ? I made this pic from my black first re-issue SP1200. It's about the model no. not the serial (unless you have a list indicating which was which).
To clarify :
1. Original grey edition SP1200 / SSM2044 filters / model no. 7030 (square power switch)
2. First re-issue black SP1200 / SSM2044 filters / model no. 7030 (square power switch)
3. Second re-issue black SP1200 / OPAMP filters / model no. 7031 (larger fader knobs and round power switch)

I haVE 7030 ROUND peg, no stickers on the back, model and serial number stickered on the bottom
