Unformatted HD Disks = the same as DD disks???Yo....
i've read all the threads about using HD's (covering the hole), etc...
now we all know that DD disks are mad pricey and nearly impossible to find new.
a guy in the mpc forum wrote, that if you can find unformatted HD disks and format them in your machine, you can use them like dd disks, without covering the whole.
for the machine it would be like a dd disk then.
any experience on this?

that doesnt make any sense. you cant change the type of media by how you format it. its still a hd disk

You can fool HD drives into thinking a DD disk is HD but not the other way around. That being said, some DD drives can read HD just fine and I'm assuming the SP drive (at least the 7030 later model) does just that. Couldn't get them to work with my grey model though.

thx

yes, i have a 7030 black re-edition (1994) and the floppy drive reads HD discs, i always use that kind of floppy, but i don't know if the drive has been replaced with another (maybe it's not the original drive), and i don't know what brand of drive it is
next time i open up the sp i'll try to find what brand it is then post the informations here

^^That would be really nice cause infos on floppy drives of old samplers are rare and who want to pay 90$ for a floppy drive at route66 when a 5$ drive from ebay also work.
There are some sites that explain how to modify drives for old computers like the Commodore Amiga. I'm very interested if these mods also work for the old samplers (sp, eps, s900, s950).

yeah this would be great, 'cause purchasing new dd disks is nearly impossbile and very expensive

it could be possible. i've bought this machine only one year ago, and is possible that in so many years (till 1994) the drive has been replaced. i've not opened the machine yet, sorry. i'll do it sooner as possible.

thx

Sorry that I havenīt responded to this earlier...
Thatīs exactly the switch Iīm talking about in the other post.
ALL INSTRUCTIONS BELOW ON YOUR OWN RISK !!!
All you have to do is take the diskdrive apart carefully !!!
Then desolder the switch and test with a HD disk !
If it ainīt working by just desoldering the switch, then connect the two holes together where the switch was mounted.
EDIT: Make sure you desolder the DD/HD switch and not the READ/WRITE switch !!! Just put a floppy in halfway to check if youīre unsure.
Hope this is to some help, if not I may consider takin my Sp1200 apart and do a guide with photos.
