Tune up and down question

Hi people,

I just had my SP1200 for like a week or so.

When I tune a sound up or down does it tune in semitones?

I think it does and I sure can find a way to find out but I really want to ask this:

When I sample off vinyl lets say some piano or a bassline, if i decide to pitch up the records to lets say +8 and 45rpm it seems that i will lose the note key and when I sample and pitch down, I will never have the same key note at the end.

If i just wanna sample its OK i guess but if i sample bass and i want to play some keys over it with my sound module, everything will be out of tune.

Whats the best way to do this?

Should I record on my DAW and pitch up 8 notes and then pitch down in the SP 8 notes?

Peace!

I would let the record play at normal speed (33 1/3) and try to play along with the sound modul or VSTi or whatever. I most cases it should fit and then you can simply change to 45 RPM and tune the sample down 5 semitones in the SP.
For the case that your sound module is not in tune with the record on 33 1/3 you can finepitch the turntable till it is and then change to 45 RPM (dont touch the pitchfader now). It should be in tune when you tune down in the SP

Not necessarily.  And you can't assume the vinyl you are sampling from was recorded at concert pitch either!

If you are sampling bass to play on top of your sampled loop, then simply sample the right bass note.  To extend the range, you can sample a higher or lower bass note on a separate pad.

If you do want to retain the original pitch of the record though you need to work out the key which corresponds to a 34.6~% change in pitch (8% variable speed + 26.6~% standard speed) ; ~ being recurring.

Thanx to both.

I know what you are talkingabout.

When I sampled on my MPC60 I had the record play at 45rpm and at +8 (technichs sl1200mk2) and I had to tune down at -66 on my mpc which corresponds to -6semitones and 60cents of a semitone.

On the SP i would have to pitch it down -7 to be as closeas i can get to the original speed but the key is lost.

I hate sampling on wavelab and then to my sp so i did this:

I sampled on my mpc2000xl. made a simple sequence and put a bass from my mo phatt sound module and found out that the sample had to be tunes to -2 to be in tune with the bass cos the vinyl was off tune anyway (the original speed mustve been lost somewhere in the process).

then i pitched it up +20 in the mpc so it can fit on a pad in the sp so -2 + 20 = +18.

then once in my sp i just tunes it down two semitones (two lines beneth the original tune) and it was the same pitch as the mpc (-2) and it was in tune with my bass. So i guess id have to sample something first on the mpc2kxl, make a preview of it sequencerwise and tunewise and then sample it on the sp. Plus its a hassle to run accross my control room to rewind the record so I can sample again cos it was overloaded in the SPs input. So I can just sample 3 minutes on the MPC2KXL select the parts I want, tune them right and then go to the SP.

Please tell me if you have any remarks on this path: vinyl>mpc2kxl>sp1200.

Peace!
