Stereo sampling with the SP-1200

You need 2 SP-1200's, mixer and midi to do this.

Arm the sample mode on both machines, select which pad you want the sample on [2] Assign Voice then push [4] Threshold Set to activate sampling when the sample you like to capture with a stereo source. Now press [7] Arm Sampling and start the sample source. Once you've done that you can go in and adjust the start of the sample if you need to. Both samples will trigger at the same time when connected thru midi. You could do this with 1 SP, but phasing might be a problem. You just have to resample or use Alchemy to get precise chops then send it to the SP. The plus with 2 SP's you can use the same assigned voice output, but use different mixing techniques, also more sample time.

Two SP-1200's?! Surprised

DFACE DXA

stereo sp? nutty like planters shit.

....

to me using 2 sp's just to achieve a stereo image seems like a waste. most records that you sample dont have such a wide stereo image on them that you need to retain that in a sampler... usually its a matter of what side is stronger to use, L or R.. that method is tried and true. in the 80's people doubled shit with the emax like this but that was before DAW's. now, you can put yr snare up in a DAW, copy it, offset it, and hard pan them from eachother for a wide stereo image. plus theres tons of plug-ins which alter the stereo image the same way different mic placement on a record does. another thing to consider is that if you are pressing yr tracks to vinyl, you have to be careful about having crazy stereo imaging going on.. you need to have all the bass in mono both sides alike or they cant cut the acetate.

the bomb squad used 2 sp's and made the biggest wall of sound ever in hip-hop.. thats where its at.

just my opinion tho...

Doing beats on the computer is nice and convenient, but you can be just as fast on external hardware when familiar with the machine. Also it’s fun to work on the SP no matter how much time it takes. When grabbing stereo samples there are a lot of unique instances. Depending on what technique your going for. For the vinyl heads you can pick up the "Fish Grease" 12" EP here: http://www.distrakt.com/store.html

hey whatever works for you man. i wish i had two 2 sp1200's to mess with, thats an amazing setup.

whether you are tracking into a computer or to anoalog tape, individual channels or whole mixout, its still a simple task to double a mono track and offset it in the stereo field. its a good way to get a full stereo mix.

i used to have two SPs.  one black one grey.  the grey one had a lot of the problems that you hear about the grey ones having tho...  and it was such a bitch chopping with the grey beast it that i didn't like to use it.  plus i had the trusty s950.  so i never took the twin SP1200 setup to the limit.  or even remotely close.  the most i did was trigger the grey one with the black one, i never synced the sequencers or anything.  i'm ashamed to say it but it's a fact.  you know how it goes, sometimes i don't feel like doing all that extra shit.

one day i want to have 10 SP1200s all nice and neat next to each other.  i wonder about the polyphony issue, but imagine the monstrous beat you could make...

Flashius - what do you mean the grey model was difficult to chop on ? Whats the difference ?

Just curious cause I've got a grey one.
