SP12 - Sampling + gainHi,
Been getting into the SP12 again for a few weeks, one thing confounds me though.
When i sample with the threshold set to 0db I get a crappy input level (even with the gain knob full up).
When I set it to +20db The input level is great & I have to level off the gain knob (to about 50%) so as not to overload the input.
Now I sample via a Vestax PMC 07 pro DJ mixer & sum the signal using a 'Y' cable (stereo to mono).
Any idea why the Input is so low? The level coming out of the mixer seems boomingly loud to me...
thank
Jonny

Re: SP12 - Sampling + gainI'm assuming you are using the TRS output on the Vestax. It has a nominal value of 0dBV compared to the RCA out which is consumer -4dBV. But BOT, its normal that you will get a lower signal from the 0dB setting on the SP (compared to +20dB which is recommended for dynamic mic levels). It doesn't matter which you use as the SP's convertor makes no distinction between the 2. That setting is a coarse increment (as opposed to the gain knob which is much finer). Although, following best practice, its probably best to have a healthy gain at 0dB setting rather than attenuate a hot signal at +20dB. You may also want to keep your mixer settings at unity and allow for gain at the sampling stage.

also, it should be noted that although its a digital system, the SP uses dBu referencing. So you should really be thinking of the ceiling as 0dBFS and not the 42dB it states!!!

Thanks for the info, when I sample I always have the input just peaking at red or '0' on the fader & the master set to around '7' (although there is no numerical guide, just a series of lines with a thicker line at what I perceive to be '7'...

Have you tried with the master at "ten" if that's the maximum? The 1200 requires quite a hot signal.
