SP 1200 / Computer / Sound Card ?

I'm sampling a lot of stuff from fruity loops after I compress and add reverb, EQ..etc on drum samples.. I was curious what is the best process for sampling directly from my computer runinng through a Boss BX-800 8 Channel Stereo Mixer then to my SP 1200? Right now I have a cheap surround sound Audigy $60 Dollar sound card. I would like to buy a good quality sound card that would be external so I don't need to reach behind my PC tower to switch the cord back and forth. What would be a good quality Exteranl Sound Card?

This is my process right now:

1. Downloading a lot of nice wav files or sampling records.
2. Import Beat Slice with Fruity Loop.
3. Fruity Loops does a nice job of chopping or slicing up the beat for me.
4. Adding Fruity Loops EQ, Reverb, Compression and whatever else I need there.
5. Sampling running a cord from my Boss BX-800 Mixer to my SP 1200 Sample in and my Mix out to my Computer.
6. Step Programming each drum sound with the SP 1200.
7. Then later I can record the beat back to my computer using Left and Right Out channels back to my computer from the mixer and Sp 1200.

This process is ok for now.. but, I want to do more quality type shiz so, just curious what would be a good route to go..any ideas?

thx,

Mek

what you need......vinyl, record player... and wahtever it takes to get the idea of sampling from your computer out of your head
HavDeaf!

dont sample from your soundcard man, if you did tests, you'd notice it sounds like ass. just learn how to chop your own shit and get away from the computer. if u really wanna sample shit from your computer, get a digi interface or mbox, something along the lines of that.

What's been said...get yourself a good turntable and a decent DJ mixer or a phono preamp.
For good audio interfaces check out the Focusrite Saffire LE or the Terratec Phase X24 FW. Both interfaces got some very good reviews.
Other good interfaces : Presonus Firebox or if you have the loot an RME FireFace.
If you want to go the ProTools route get yourself an MBox or better a Digi002 Rack (can be bought on eBay for a good price).

Yeah, I've noticed the shit has not been sounding all that.. that's why I was wondering what were my options.. I have a turntable technique 1200 and mixer, but since I have been getting lazy to buy vinyl I haven't used it that much.. I have some records around 10 crates of records; breaks, original breaks, and tons of 80's to 90's hip hop shit. Funny thing is I see a lot of shit on the internet that I know I could never find on vinyl and if I did it would cost a fortune to get a distant copy and plus more I don't have the space for vinyl storage.

Here's what I'm thinking to do now:

1. Buy an Audio Interface " Focusrite Saffire LE " or " MBOX " The Digi002 Rack is out of my budget.
2. I can still use my Boss BX-800 8 Channel Stereo Mixer for now..
3. I'm thinking about a phono preamp if I'm going to using vinyl.

As far as ProTools route goes the item like the Digi002 Rack is out of my budget.. and I'm not sure how needed this is since I'm not planning on hooking up a recording studio .. I just want quality sound from home sampling stuff from my computer and turntable to my SP 1200 and just recording shit back to my computer from the SP 1200?

Thanks for the Advice!!!

In FL you can do Import beat to slice and just select your .wav file ( beat ) ( drums ) then it will slice it up.. then you can add extra shit like EQ, Compression, Reverb.. and just click on each slice and sample the slices into the SP 1200. Of course you still need to truncate, beef up, and program your beat on the SP 1200 but, at least fruity loops will give you a skeleton idea of what the beat sounds like sliced up before you start just blindly sampling different snares and kicks from a record or whatever other source.

YES!

if ure serious about music get a job and work so u can afford ure gear, then quit ure job.

save up for an rme fireface 800 so you can record into the pc.

get a mixer of some sort and 1 turntable either a technics or a numark ttx.

sample from vinyl record into the pc. or if u want record from the pc from mp3's either or.

I just use my fireface software as my mixer, I got a patchbay so I bassically have an 8 channel mixer, no eq or anything..you just have to get a good idea of what you want to eq when it's in there which is usually easy...like oh I know I want to hi-pass that so it won't be so cluttered or obviously a boost on the low end on lo pass filtered stuff
MekOne

mmm.. The rme fireface 800 interface is like $1500.00!!! That's steep! I got a job but, I don't wanna dish out this money right now for a digi interface.. My limit is $400 or less right now. What's a patchbay? is that something like this..http://www.zzounds.com/item--BEHPX3000 ?
Deta!L

get one used, I got my FF800 for $700!

and my patchbay was 99 dollars...but cables were like 5 bills

I'm not clear on what I should buy or what my process should be?

If I'm going to be using a lot of .wav files. I'm confussed. Most of the greatest shit done on the SP 1200 was using the Akai S950 for sampling and chopping and then sequencing on the SP 1200 using the different channels there for low end shit like channel assignment 1 or 2 on the sp 1200. Also most shit was taken from records and mixers.

I'm not sure what the quality will be sampling the .wav files and then running through the FF800? What kind of sound it will produce and output sound to my SP 1200?

I need some examples like who did a beat this way by sampling a .wav file and running through a FF800 to the SP 1200 recorded??

go to my myspace page and listen to sacra

i did that using an mp3 file for the samples, just ran a line out from my digi 001 at the time and sampled into the s950
MekOne

mmm.. ok. so, computer to digi 001 to s950 then did you sequence this with the SP 1200?

So, basically you went from your computer to digi 001 to S950 then ran midi to the SP 1200 to sequence the samples and program sequences on the SP 1200?

By the way, Beat sounds hot! cool shit. Hope one day my beats sound quality and nice.

thats how it goes.

youre better off avoiding any other a/d conversion(besides the sampler) untill you track your beat in. cuz you go record sampled iinto 00, signal out 001 sampled into a machine, final beat tracks out the sampler into the 001 again.

you convert in twice n out once. this is way too much shit a/d goin on the way i see it.
i convert once(besideds the sampler) record>sampler>tape>digital.

if you get a newer machine you can edit your samples in the computer wihtout having to resample or change the sound quality you just take teh digital data and edit it preserving the sound quality. even an emax can do this wiht newer software, or a 950 if you can somehow figga out akai disk.

..

Generally using something like fruitly loops for effects prob isnt the worst thing, but youd be best to use it for minor things like eq and light compression before you sample. It all depends on the type of music you are making though... alot of people use s950 and sp because its a good, classic sounding combo thats been used on alot of records. but im sure you could do some pretty good shit by integrating the sp and the computer. Some beats like Machinedrum and Aphex Twin records sound like they integrate alot of differnt things for the music and theres alot of possibilities, especially with realtime processing of samples etc.

That RME Fireface box looks really nice, but damn is that expensive. You could buy a pretty decent mono preamp for a fraction of that and track the individual channels using the SMPTE code on the SP12. It might take a while longer, but you get the same results. Theres also a few akai digital workstations that track 8 channels at once that you could get for about 400 bills and dump to digital for mixing.
