Sample dump for both SP-12 & SP-1200?

Is it possible to do a MIDI sample dump from both the SP-12 & the SP-1200 coz i read somewhere that you can only do this with the SP-1200, anyone know?
DFACE DXA

1200 only
Dirty 1200

I think the SP12 turbo has midi sample dump. But not sure ...
essence

yeah..I thought I read it somewhere...might be possible if you got OS version 2.6 and higher (seems not possible with 2.4 though)
kiwi

I also read on the Emulator Archive site that it was possible with O.S 2.6.
des?

from the emulator page:

MIDI Sample Dump The SP-12 (OS 2.4+) does support MIDI sample dump and a user who has the SP-12 used by Phil Collins, reports a new OS version and MIDI sample dump lsited on the front panel.

i wrote with the guy from the emulator page for some month

and he write that i find the midi sample dump option in the save/load option,
but i didn't find it
kb

some stuff to add:

I hooked up my SP12Turbo (running 2.6) MIDI out to my PC (Edirol UM-1 MIDI to USB converter) and watched the MIDI out on midiview (nice little freeware).

I played some drumpads and got the note ON/OFF messages so all was working.

I then pressed the Cassette/Sync button and on the SP's LCD came the message, "Cassette/Disk [11-39]." Now, on the front panel of the SP's 'Cassette/Disk' section only has two options: 1 Cassette and 2 Disk. Why isn't it just options [11 - 29]?

I found out the SP-12 Librarian software uses just the MIDI ports for managing the sample and sequencer memory dumps and loads. In their manual, they talk about preceding all their Save/Load commands on the SP with a '3', so apparently later SP-12 OS revs do the cassette work via MIDI and they claim it's a hell of a lot faster.

So my last experiment: I pressed Cassette/Sync, then 31, and on the MIDI view on my PC I got this:

SysEx 18 01 00 F7
SysEx 18 01 01 F7

which then stopped and the SP told me I had NoDisk Connected (it must have been waiting for a handshake).

All this must mean that you can do MIDI sample dumps on the SP12, but I guess you gotta figure out the SP12's sysex first.

Anybody know any more?

that is a good info. i hope there is a way to make a sample dump between the sp and pc.

Hi I just got an sp12 turbo myself (v2.6) and after gaining so much info from this great site I would like to share my own knowledge in the matter of sample dumps.

Now I dont know anything about dumping to a pc but .... if you have an old school Atari ST lying around its very easy to do. If you go to this site
http://tamw.atari-users.net/codehead.htm
and scroll down there is a free version of genpatch to download ( and yes its all legal.. lol ) just burn it to a floppie disc boot up the trusty old ST and start genpatch you can do a midi dump of either the sequences or samples
both ways if you use the older version genpatch ( the newer version is demo only...didnt work for me but the old ones fine Wink ).
You have to have a closed loop (midi in to midi out both machines) and then its cass/disc on the sp12 then its option 34 for samples 35 for sequences press enter and thats all she wrote....it takes a fraction of the time of the old comodore drive plus you can find the discs easier even if they are the old 3.5 ddds discs same as the sp1200.

ive been checking out this site for the atari and they say you can even run an st emulator( STEem on the pc or NoSTalgia on the mac ) that supports midi...if you do that then you can save to the pc via sample dump using genpatch ...

hope this helps?

^^^ nice info man ima try that when I get a chance.
kb

tried it, mixed results

put Steem on my PC, then installed GenPatch.

using an Edirol MIDI-USB converter from SP into my PC.

got it to xfr the short sequence file, no problem (though I'm new to OS emulators - hard to figure out how to save the uploaded file...).

but the sound dump was different. started out working, but then hung up after about 40sec. both the SP and the emulated app just stopped in mid xfr.

might be due to the buffer size on the Atari emulator - apparently the SP needs a Sysex handshake every now and then.

might try it on my wife's Mac...

yo kb, are you rockin 2.6 as well?

what version of genpatch did you try? cos even on my atari I could`nt get the newer version to run smoothly like I said its a demo version but the older version in the genpatch2 folder works nice on the ST. I did`nt try the emulator as the atari was just sitting there doing nothing ( I actually have 2 of em !! ) and now I finally have a use for it..lol

anyway Id be interested to know if the emulators work ( just in case something happens...you never know ! ) so keep us all updated.
kb

sorry - my post was a bit too brief.

anyway, my SP12Turbo's running 2.6, so it's latest/greatest.

and I'm using WinXP on a Dell Laptop.

shaolin69: that's a good tip. I was using the Genpatch2 app, dated 1990, but I don't remember seeing anything about it being the demo version. I'll try the Genpatch1, dated 1985.

also, Steem comes in two versions, a TOS1.02 and a TOS2.06. my experiments with 1.02 were a lot more consistent than with 2.06.

all this makes me think I should buy an old AtariST!!! still, if we can figure a way to get sample dumps back and forth to a PC, that'd be a benefit for a lotta SP12 heads.

stay tuned...

some new infos

F0 18 01 41 F7

is to start the connection

F0 18 01 20 F7

is to end the connection

when you want test it, take a sysex tool like midi-ox. go to cassette/disk 31 or 32. press enter and directly send sysex.

you see the information writing the disk / NO = Abort in the Sp display

then send F0 18 01 20 F7

and you see Cassete/Disk Complete in the Display
kb

des?, that's incredibly good stuff!

I tried it a little bit this morning. for the segment dumps, it works like a charm.

when I tried the sample dumps, it got through a few blocks, then it seemed like it was waiting for another handshake/request from the computer before it sent any more data, OR it wanted to do a readback or something. when I then sent the 'close session', the SP12 gave me DiskRead error on the LCD

any idea on what those intermittent handshakes are? are they generic or specific to the data in the sample dump?

again, this is great progress!
des?

at the sample dump modus

F0 18 01 20 F7

is not the closing sessions. i think this is a handshake, but i don't know.

i can delte all segments and songs, but i can not load save seqence load to the sp.

when you find out something the write it please.

sorry for my bad english. Laughing

i have recived a complete sampledump from the sp12

but i don't know how I can convert it, that i can it send back

here is a sysex file for a simple drumloop

http://www.megaupload.com/de/?d=I70QTJCX

use midiox, dumpster 2 or another programm what can send sysex

My first Sample Dump

A BD and SD from a YAMAHA PortaSound PSS-190

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=RRJ4UBNB

It is a SYSEX File. You need a Sysex Tool.

Here to files. First the dump from sp12 to pc and then the handmodification file to send it back.

i save the files in the rtf format, because it is a better look.

does anyone here have the program SampleVision ? it was made by Turtle Beach...it can dump samples to the SP1200 and even has SCSI dumps for samplers like the Ensoniq EPS...as well as a heap of other samplers...

would really love to find a copy of this!

Has anyone been able to sample dump successfully with their emu sp 12 on a mac?

If so can you please go through a step by step process.

Do I need to get the atari emulator i.e steam and run that on the mac?

Or do I need to get SP librarian?  What version of mac will the sp librarian run on ?

Also has anyone successfully changed the ROM sounds on their sp 12?
kb

still on my list...

haven't ever got the sample dump on sp12 to work, as you need custom handshaking.

tried steem Atari emulator on my PC, but it kept crashing/hanging.  emailed John Eidsvoog, the guy who wrote that code, and, while he was friendly and nice about my email, just couldn't remember what the handshaking protocol was since it was so long ago

never went the sp librarian route, but might be a good way to go?

so figuring out the sp12 sample dump is still on my list of things to do.  I'm just more interested in modding hardware right now than software.

on the bright side, my sp12 right now IS running an 808 kit from the ROMs.  I got the samples off hyperreal, did some translation/processing, then burned the ROMs.  they're a bit noisy due to aliasing, so there might be a way to improve the sound quality, but I like the crunch.

what kind of eprom burner did you use?
kb

eprom programmer

I used a Willem-type that I got off ebay for ~$50.  it's pretty straightforward to use.  I use it from my PC laptop.
RHYTHM MONSTER

Yo Kerry, I'm curious what your 808 kit sounds like. I'm running a "809" kit right now and would be glad to share with anyone who has a burner. I've been making a bunch of kits lately and I've been throwing my 808's on the TOM. Maybe the crash is better for the 808 kick, what did you go with?
kb

I can send you my EPROM images...

Just got back into town.  Do you want me to send you my EPROM images?
kb

can I get your kits?

hey, saw you're selling your sp12 on ebay!  best of luck!!!

can you email me your kit binaries???   Wink

i try it. but it don't run. the problem is, that the sp-12 use a special sample dump with handshakes.
thx
