mpc 2000xl vs. mpc 60Hey...I have had an mpc2000xl for a couple of months now, and i was thinkin of gettin me an mpc60II...One of my homies wants to trade his mpc60 for my mpc2000xl...Should i go ahead and do the damn thing or what?
What should i go for, is the mpc60 better than the 2000xl, why would you think so?
What makes the mpc60 different from the mpc2000xl apart from the 12bit
feature(s)?

Download the 60 manual, read it then ask your boy to swap units for a month.
Then you will know for sure.

What N D Loop said, function-wise you get a step back but it all depends on what you do with it -> sometimes having something simpler leads to use it more creatively.

better seq better sound better reliability and if its maxed its worth more than a xl. 60s a for lifer piece. you will be giving up alot of sample time so keep that in mind with your production stal.

Okay...So D your saying the 60 has a better sequencer? Even if i traded it i know
i would be giving up a lotta samp time but what if i already have an ASR10?
Ess, which one of the two are you talkin about, which one would you personally go for? 2000xl or 60...
And N thanks for that ima do that right away, but what would you personally
choose outta the 2?
-Thank you fellas-
Holla back...

MPC3K
The real is whether or not his 60 has the v3.10 software.
A 60mkI w/ v3, and SCSI (memory helps) just has a real nice vibe to it.
You can get a lot done with the 2k, it just won't be as ear friendly as using the 60 and a rack.
You can find EPS16's pretty cheap, same as 950's.
If you have a 60 you can even go with something like the ESI-2000 (not 32) and still be killing it sound wise.

I talked about the 60. There is just one single property that I don't like on the 60 :
its outputs are too quiet so you have to use a mixer (if you haven't got one already) to pump it up a bit.
However, the best way for you would be to mess with it for a couple of weeks like mentioned earlier. In the end, it all depends on how you like it or not compared to your 2000.
I'd get the MPC-60.

I assume you ask because of its limited sampling time ?
Depends on the MPC-60 OS and the memory :
With full memory you get 26.2 seconds of sampling time (13.1 secs with standard mem) and with the OS 3.1 you are even able to compress your samples which would result in a theoretical amount of 52.4 secs. Theoretical, because that compression may hurt certain samples to the point where you'd better not compress them.
Oh and there is still the "sample @45 RPM / pitch down in your sampler" trick for using less memory.
And for saving you have to use DD floppies unless you have the SCSI interface which would allow you to use ZIPs, JAZ, PC-CARD and what not...
