Buzzing PSU

Hi all,

First, its great that there is still at least one decent forum for SP12/1200 heads to discuss their machines!

I recently purchased a SP1200 (the original all grey model) which I am using in the UK. It works but there are two issues which I am hoping someone on this forum may be able to prvoide some advice on:

(i) Buzzing PSU - the PSU (or it could be the transformer, if there is one internally) on the unit makes a very loud buzzing noise - in fact, the machine vibrates because of the PSU! I understand that the PSU in this model is the old linear model PSU which can be re-built part by part. However, I was wondering if there is any advantage (or disadvantage) in replacing the PSU completely with a newer switchable PSU? I hear the switcahble PSUs can interfere with the sound coming out of the unit (excess noise).

(ii) Hiss/System Noise - I can hear hiss/system noise (i.e. noise from the PSU, disk drive etc) from the main out of the unit when the volume is moderately increased. Is this a common problem? I still need to check the individual outs to see if they have problems.

Any experience or advice on the above issues would be much appreicated. Also, any recommendations for the unit to be serviced in London (other the CimpleSolutions)?

Thanks

sounds like you need quite a makeover

That does not sound too good!

Any thoughts on the switchable PSU?

Thanks.

id say upgrade the psu no doubt.  someobody here can correct me if im wrong but i think the psu on the old grey ones is similar to the one on the sp12.  if it is it gets crazy hot.  my sp12 could be used as some kind of electric frying surface.

DfaceD, the unit gets very hot and also vibrates so much that it moves my whole desk!

Thanks DeckD for finding the PSU - I was on the EPR website and completely missed it when trying to locate a PSU. I will be emailing them as I need to determine whether it is internally able to accept UK's 240V.
