Akai S950 VS. Roland Dr Sample Boss SP-303

Which sampler is a better buy quality and sound and bang for your buck this sampler will be partnered with the SP 1200?

My guess is the S950 wins in functionality and teaming better with the SP 1200. Perhaps the Boss SP-303 has limited cutting resources and I don't know what cats are using this sampler, but I heard about it and just wanted to know the pros and cons of users that team this sampler with the SP 1200?

apples n oranges

if i were you id get some kind of sampler that reads wav or has a file format you can open in the computer wiht whatever software. computer access to files seemed important to you.

If your'e serious about building a nice studio around the SP you'll get the 950. The only thing you're getting with the SP303 is FX and if you don't have a proper mixer for the SP + another sampler get one first and then patch in or send your effects with a nice rack unit.

Does the S950 Read Wav Files? I know the SP 303 does and you can save the wavs and aiff files on it.

So, I need to purchase:

S950.
Rack Unit is this like a Digi 001 or something?
Proper mixer for the SP and another sampler? What kind of mixer? I thought all I needed was:

SP 1200
S950
Digi 001
and Protools and FL. for a studio set up?

I have a turntable and numark mixer as well..

mmm..

dude all you need to do is make music...make music..make music....

you'll then find out what you NEED

fuck, you can make a bunch of beats and then take tehm to a studio to track out if you need to. just get busy doing you.

I've been making a bunch of beats the stuff I'm using is wav files and going from my computer to my boss mixer then a Y cable to my SP 1200 for sampling.. but, when I took my beats my friends studio the quality and volume was not good. He needed to do a lot of work in cubase to make shit sound ok. I really don't think it's worth it to just do a bunch of low quality beats and then attempt to doctor them up later.. It's like if you put in shit your going to get out shit.. so, I'm trying to put in good and get out good... you feel me.
Deta!L

then what you need is a better soundcard or go straight from record to the sp

they are not cheap, just do what you're doing and save. stay in at night and eat pb and j's if you have to..."the righteous man sacrifice to get what he deserves"

other than that if you need more sample time I'd go for the 950 but the 303 will be good as well...I just don't particularly like the sound of it

also if your friend is recording in cubase you might want to get a copy too, use some limiters on your samples going out to get them louder and use EQ's and other VST's to get closer to the sound you want

call me crazy but im not a fan of the 303 at all. 950 is golden buddy, get your hands on one

Use this signal chain for sampling :

PC with Audiointerface -> DJ Mixer -> Mixing Console (your BOSS) -> SP or S950
(I do this myself, except coming from the turntable instead of the PC)

Make sure you get the loudest possible signal without distortion on the SP. Experiment with the different gain settings on DJ Mixer, Mixing Console and SP (use +20dB). As far as I know the Numark DJ Mixers mostly suck so you could get a nice one as for example : Technics SH-DJ1200 / SH-EX1200, ECLER HAK 310 or SHURE PMC 05 Pro (III)

Use this signal chain for recording :

SP & S950 separate outs -> Mixing Console -> Audiointerface

or

SP & S950 separate outs -> Audiointerface

and no, you don't necessarily need a new mixing console, just use the outputs you really need : e.g. 4 outs from the SP, 3 outs from the S950

Sound Card = M-Audio Delta 44 recording interface M power Protools
Head Phones = JBL Reference 510 ( on sale with 50 bucks off coupon @ costco JUNE 11th )
Sampler Akai S950 = Besides Ebay where can I find this?

I figure for now I can go from my sound card to boss mixer then to the sp 1200.

I just figured to buy the S950 after reading a lot of reviews and seeing what the main cats like; Easy Mo Bee http://www.onestopbeats.com/easymobee.html, Ced Gee, Premo and others are using.. Although, Madlib did use the sp-303 on Funny Clown for the Madvillian Victor Vaughn Album. Still the S950 filters and just the way it teams with the SP 1200 might be a better choice for me.

One thing I'm curious about is do I really need a digi 001 interface? If I'm buying a good quality sound card and just going from that directly to my mixer or directly to the S950.

One other thing..I will be using Fruity Loops so Should I add EQ and Reverb and Compression to my drums prior to sampling them into the S950?
Deta!L

dude if you're using FL just sample your drums from your sp into your comp and pull those into FL...or better yet sell your SP to someone who can utilize it

I don't understand you

I'm ignorant I will admit that.. I just want to know if I'm going from my pc to my sp 1200. The way your saying just sample your drums from your sp into your comp makes sense if I am grabbing samples from records then going from mixer to sp. But, that's not my plan.. My plan is to use wav files to go from PC to SP. So, I need to know is it better to add these filters in FL then to sample through my sound card to the SP1200 or Akai S950 when I get one..?
Deta!L

no, fruity loop filters are shit...I really think your best bet is to sample your sp drums and just use those in fruity loops...done deal, you get the Sp drums and do whatever you want to your FL samples to sound good otherwise it seems like a whole lot of trouble and you're not really getting the SP experience with workflow and limitations...you're faking the funk yaddadamean?

Deta!L wrote:

well stated
MekOne

cool got it..

Quality and funk = records and original shit required.
Mixer = needed for transfer to S950.
Sampler = Midi up to Sp 1200.
Sequence / Triplets / Swing / Beef up = hot joint.

I'm not asking anymore questions until I get my shit .. in like a week or two.. after that I will post a beat via myspace page..

thanks for putting up with my crazy ass questions..
