Akai s950 vs Akai s1100Hey fellas,
I've come to dilemma between akai s1100 and akai s950. I basically need a sampler to work with melodic samples. Clear and stereo sound of the samples is preferrable, but dirtiness also attracks me. I've read tons of information on both machines so what I'm looking for is users of both machines who could tell me the difference.
thanks.

i got em both. fan of both but i think the 950 is the best sampler ever made hands down.
s950 has a better sound and a better lowpass
s1100 has poly outs, ability to use mulitple programs, alot more ram, faster for making programs from scratch, stereo sampling, alot of effects, stock scsi (950 its rare as fuck only a few of us have the luxury), s11 is more compatible with scsi devices, a visible waveform picture display(some of us are fine wiht numbers alone for chopping) for the sample on top of the display being about 4 times the size.
i get around the lack of stereo sampling and one program setup buy owning a s900 also which at times is use both together. its a little excessive to some but i picked up the 900 so cheap its worth it for spare parts alone.
a 950 maxed usually costs much more than a s1100. i got my s11 mint for dirt cheap. only slightly more than my 900.
id say on average 950 maxed is about 250, and a s1100 is worth prob 150 max i dont really see them go on ebay alot so it might be a lil less or a lil more. you might also want to look out for a s3000 or s3200 becuase the interface is better. the s1000/s11 have two nobs instead of a nob and a cursor button. i dont know how they stack up soundwise tho id assume the s11 n s3000 are real close tho.

Thanks for the prompt response!
I've decided to try both of them since they're so cheap.
Do you chop the samples on s11 and then run through 950? Could you elaborate more on using these two machines together?

no matter what sampler i use im going from the turntable to the sampler directly. it would compromise the sound of the s950 to go through the s11 first.
mostly i dont use both at the same time. i sometimes do if im using the s1100 for bass as a synth or in a similar fashion.
im normally sequencing a rack sampler from either my mpc or sp. most of the time its the 950. s11 is for when im taking a lot of sample time or a long stereo sample. but for the most part the 950 can handle biz.

^^still one of the illest lab I#ve seen But how do you work with the 950 in that position. I know the display of the 900/950 is easier to read if the eyes are a little bit higher than the display but dont you get problems with your back when working with the 950

nah its fine ive had the 950 like that before i had any of the other samplers. the picture is misleading cuz you cant see the floor. if my chair was in the pic it would make more sense. the arm of my chair is in the middle of the 950 as a reference point.
the only thing placed out of normal comfort range is the top emax. i had to stand up to get to it.

Man, those Emax HD's are sick! Did you try using them for melodic samples too? I bet you've got tons of keyboards too

i sold one of them recently. i use them for gritty sampling of melodic sheet yeah. i dont have any keyboards just a midi keyboard. 95 percent of what i do is samples

sorry I got another question. What is this thing in the rack on the table (above the Zip drive) The buttons and color look like old Akai stuff. Maybe an Akai Tapedeck??

Dface, I missed the auction...
Now, could you tell me more about the sound difference between Emax and s950 when sampling?

above the zip in the table rack is an auto locator for my akai mg
theres a pic of it in the studio pics section
emax vs s950 is like apples n oranges on sound. they both sound dope but the 950 is a lil more clear the emax is more warm. both have dope low pass, the emax one has more options and is analog. emax has alot less memory than a 950(512kb vs 2.25mb). the emax is harder to chop on. if you do alot of sp stuff the emax is a good compliment to the sp. s950 is my fav sampler tho as i said before.
