akai s950 maxed?
i get the what i'll call hierarchy of sp's. sp12<sp12turbo<sp1200. but what about the akai s950's? is it that important to have the expanded memory or the scsi chip? this is new jack as hell. i just want one to midi with my sp12turbo...should i hold off til i find one maxed? what's the word?

max memory makes your life easier.. its rare i have a 2.25mb beat but i often fill up the memory in the process of making a beat, especially if you use higher sample rates. i would definitely wait for a max ram 950, often you can find them just as cheap or only slightly more. i got two maxed ram 950's for under 200 each. scsi is a whole nother world, don't wait for scsi cuz its rare as fuck. i got the scsi upgrade after a long time, keep your eyes open if you're serious about it but dont wait for it. _________________

another new jack question...
what about just doing the memory/scsi upgrades yourself once you got the unit? is it hard to do? can you still source the chips? is it more expensive this way?
thanks for the quick response dface!

upgrading the ram is more expensive/time consuming afterwards. its not hard to install either upgrade if you know the 950. _________________

I don't agree to this...I have a S950 with standard memory (750KB) and I never needed more memory.
Sampling at "12000Hz" (means that you actually sample at 12000 x 2.5 = 30000Hz) which sounds great gives you 33 sec. sampling time ! And if you sample at 45RPM +8% pitch you can get even more so...how could 33 sec. don't be enough ?!
In addition to that, if you have the memory maxed out, you'll need several floppies to save your samples if your using more than the standard memory.

if you only rock 750kb you might as wel have a 900. i rocked a 900 for a while before i got a 950. i think you can make due whit one mem chip but havin the max makes it a diff game.
essence- 12000 gives you 33 seconds, that doesnt sound right becuase wehn i sample at 1200(w/2.25) i get 50790 which is 50 seconds, a third of that is 16 n a third seconds. i personally dont like to go that low on the rate anyway i normally rock 16000 or max. 750 on 16000 is ten seconds so at a shitty rate of 8000 youd still only be using 20 seconds. someone step in if my math is wrong. but essence it soudns like you have two memory chips at 1.5 mb _________________

I get what you mean DFACE, I guess I was wrong...although it's strange because my S950 starts up with the message "1024K Words installed" which would mean that I have 1 MB (if I assume that they counted 8 bits as one word) installed. I thought however, that the RAM components came in size of 750KB which would conclude that I should have the message "1500K Words installed".
Do you remember what your S900 were showing or what does your maxed s950 show at startup ?

I believe mine is maxed out to 2.25mb.
It say's 1536 kwords at start-up.
If yours says 1024 kwords it must mean you have 1.5 mb.
