BROKEN EMAX 1  Reply with quote

I have a few emax 1s. i opedned one up that had never worked. i got it for free a while back and i never fucked with it..its clean so i kept it in the stash for spare parts...the proplems was it wouldnt boot

problem: black squares across the screen when turned on. locked wont do shit when turned on. few leds lit up and nothing..

SOLUTION. disconnected the floppy drive. it boots normally as if you didnt put the os disk in. and turned the large  connector over on its back, previous owner musta been messing around and put it on backwards.

NEW PROBLEM: it turns on as it should states the message 'loading emu softwere" and then states "please insert disk" theres a disk in there.

new solution?
I feel as if its a step further than it was....anybody help with this? im almost positive its an issue with the disk drive. any help?
thanks yall.

I guess it was like this little story:

Part 1:

Once upon a time there was a nice little emax but the disk drive was broken so the owner try to fix it but didnt know anything so he put it back together but accidentally flip the connector. When he turn it on again, it only shows blocks on the display and nothing else happen. So he thought. "Shit, I fucked it up". After a while he thought "ok I dont care I give it away for free" He found someone named loopwhole who take care of it....

Part 2: .....some nice day loopwhole decited to open up the emax and have a closer look at it. He found out that the disk drive connector wasnt connect right and flipped it. He found out that the emax was ok so far but that it has a broken disk drive. He decited to put in a new drive.

Part 3: It was a fantastic day when the drive he ordered arrived at his home. He put it in, took care of the correct jumper settings and closed the emax body. He turn it on and the emax came to life again. And they lived happily ever after.

Smile

I would try to put in a drive from your other emax to see if its rerally the drive. Good luck and congrats for the free emax.

peace

Congrats. I dont know which floppy drive work with the emax. What drive was installed in your working one?

oh I just realized from some pictures that the emax 1 got some of the "special sized" drives. Its bigger than usual drives (just like the ones in the Akai s900).

But still it would be helpful when you take a closer look at the infos on your working drive.

I just got a drive for my broken s900. Its a chinon fb354 and its height doesnt fill the hole of the s900 but its "bigger" than pc floppy-drives. This drive was usually build in the Commodore Amiga2000. There are jumpers on it to set it to ds1 or ds0 and some jumpers are just solderable (solder bridge)

I've heard the ensoniq eps drive (Sony MPF 420-1) will work in the 1200 so it might work in the emax too.

peace

I got that back in the day from EMU before they closed up shop... It must have been perfect timing because it was when they were blowing out there hardware etc...

There is a couple drives noted in there for the Emax.

your best bet is to go to a PC recycling place and look at all the drives you can for jumpers. Most likely they will all work when you hit the configuration for the drive, what ever that is.[/url]
